Angelo Cabrera, Board Member

B.A. Political Science, Baruch College; M.A. Public Administration, Baruch College.  Having immigrated to the United States at the age of 15, Angelo has first-hand experience and understanding of the many complex barriers minority youth residing in NYC face today. Since he was a teenager, Angelo has been committed to public service and has volunteered at several non-profit organizations. He has also worked very closely with CUNY officials and the office of the Mexican Consulate to engage the Mexican community in several initiatives through target outreach strategies. In addition, Angelo is a columnist for El Diario de Mexico USA.  Angelo is a CORO Fellow through the NY Immigrant Leadership Program and trained at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in organizational leadership.  He founded an organization that aims to help students during afterschool hours in Mott Haven, the community in which he lived.  He currently is the President and Founder of MASA MexEd, a nonprofit organization that helps students in Mott Haven achieve academic success after school.   

Roselin Espinal, Board Member
Roselin Espinal was born and raised in the Dominican Republic.  At the age of thirteen, along with her parents, she migrated to the United States to live in New York City in a predominantly working class, poor Dominican neighborhood.  She understands the educational and transitional challenges faced by immigrant students as she herself did not speak nor write English as she entered the New York City public school system.  As a former ESL student, Roselin has first-hand experience of the complexities of assimilating a new culture including its language.  She would like to take this opportunity to be part of the Board for The American Dream School to help accomplish its mission by utilizing both her professional skills and educational experience as an immigrant. Roselin received a B.A. in 2000 from Binghamton State University of New York with a double major in Financial Economics and Spanish Literature.  She has been in the financial industry for the last 13+ years, having worked for major financial corporations such as JPMorgan Chase and Lehman Brothers.  She is currently a Vice President at Credit Suisse in their Latin America Private Banking division, where she utilizes her bilingual skills with offshore high net worth individuals.

Sandra Garcia, Board Member
Sandra E. Garcia was born and raised in Harlem by her Dominican immigrant parents. She remembers the first couple of words she learned in English: hiccup and boyfriend. Sandra learned English in the New York City school system and continues to learn everyday. As a first-generation Sandra understands how hard it is to go to school and have to forget about the culture and language spoken at home during the seven hour school day. It is important that students get a chance to embrace both of their languages and cultures. Sandra hopes to use her unique skill set to help The American Dream School help as many students as possible as well as grow while pursuing their mission.  Sandra has earned a Masters of Science in Journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and currently works as a News Assistant at the New York Times.

Richard Levine, Board Member
Rick Levine is a retired New York City high school principal.  During his thirty-five years in the public schools, he had the opportunity to be a founding staff member at Vanguard High School and Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School, and founding principal at Global Enterprise High School.  Rick has also published academic articles in the fields of history and education and recently published his first work of fiction, Stones from the Creek.  Rick has Bachelors and Masters degrees in history from Columbia University and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Bank Street College.

Luz Maria Rojas, Board Chair
B.A. in History, Boston College; M.S. Ed. in Childhood Education, Hunter College; Ed.M in Educational Leadership, Teachers College, Columbia University.  Luz Maria joins the American Dream Team with an impressive list of bilingual teaching experiences. As the lead teacher of the ESL program in an intermediate school in New York City, Luz was a staple at/of the intermediate school where she played an active role for six years. Luz Maria was a bilingual teacher of both math and social studies as well as being a crucial member of the School Leadership Team, the Language Allocation Policy Team and the Comprehensive Educational Plan Committee.  Luz Maria moved on to teach at a charter school in the Bronx before accepting an assistant principal position at a transfer high school in Queens.   Prior to becoming a teacher, Luz utilized her bilingual skills as an assistant media planner at McCann-Erickson.

Damian Vargas, Board Member
Born in Brooklyn to Mexican immigrant parents and a product of the New York City school system, Damian understands many of the cultural and educational challenges faced by first-generation and immigrant students and their parents.  Building on his experience, Damian is committed to the educational, professional, and political advancement of Latinos, particularly Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the New York City area. He would like to use his experience as an advocate for Latino and immigrant communities to help Masa achieve its mission.
